There are a few additional lifestyle choices I make that don't fall neatly within my Nutrition, Exercise, and Sleep sections. I've created this page to I can track those habits.
Some of my practices are supported by good evidence, like my habits surrounding UV protection. Others, not so much. For example, we don't have much data to suggest microplastics cause harm since most studies have been correlational (what's the difference?). I just use my best judgement. Since microplastics are much more likely to be neutral or negative than positive, I simply choose to limit my exposure.
Sunlight and UV Protection
When UV index is 2 or higher: I wear a hat
When UV index is 4 or higher: I try to avoid having exposed skin, wear sunscreen, and/or limit time outside
Mindfullness
10-20 minute daily guided meditation before bed
Functional Flexibility
I’ve removed chairs entirely from my home routine
When eating at home, I sit on a yoga mat
I rotate between the following positions: Sukhasana, Seiza, resting squat, V-sit
Ergonomics
I use a standing desk that is always in standing position with a wobbling mat
Arms are at ~90 degrees while typing
Center of monitor is ~eye height
Air Quality
I avoid busy roads while running
Chemical Exposure
I avoid:
Touching receipts (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122232)
Microplastic Exposure
I avoid:
Eating canned foods
Drinking bottled water
Microwaving foods in plastic containers
Storing foods in plastic containers
I have switched to a stainless steel water bottle
Dental Care
2x/day brush teeth
1x/day thick floss
2x/day tongue scraper
Nail Biting
I am (or used to be) the worst nail biter I had ever met. For many years, my fingers were almost always red, swollen, and bleeding, since I also bit the skin around my nails. I'm not sure why I did this, but I suspect it was a coping mechanism for stress or boredom. I used a bitter, clear nail polish to quit and no longer do this!
